and regain some campaign momentum after last night. mitt romney took the fight to gingrich on the biggest stage before florida voters crown one candidate the official front-runner in the race to face off barack obama. the gloves, they came off early last night when romney defending his wealth and record while ripping into the former speaker from his rhetoric on the campaign trial. >> mr. speaker, i'm not antiimmigrant. my father was born in mexico. my wife's father was born in wales. the idea is repulsive. don't use a term like that. >> you tell me what language you would use to describe who thinks that deporting a grandmother or grandfather from their family -- >> i'm not going to go find grandmothers and take them out of their homes. those are your words. our problem is not 11 million grandmothers. our problem is 11 million people getting jobs legal immigrants would like to have. >> mitt romney is seeing a search in florida.
8:01 am
new numbers have him close to a double digit lead over gingrich in florida. let's review the debate with michael. it was a back and forth, again, the spotlight on romney. this is really the first time we've seen mitt romney taking on a real threat on that stage that is since we've seen rick perry up there, when mitt romney really thought rick perry was a big person to look out for. did he deliver that real knockout punch he needed to to newt gingrich? >> it was definitely a punch. we talk about these debates in terms of substance, but i think the way voters have been treating these debates, the 19th last night, they look for who's the toughest up there. the alpha dog. his flip back and forth, if you remember in south carolina, newt gingrich was getting the better of mitt romney, not only by
8:02 am
attacking the media, him, but by looking confidence. romney was awkward in talking about his own wealth and taxes. it really is just in time. the romney people are still confident that they can win this thing even if they lose florida, but losing florida would be a huge blow to them. newt gingrich is left with three or four days to campaign without his greatest assets, a televised debate. >> you bring up wealth and taxes. let's play the exchange that happened last night and show everybody. >> i have earned the money i have. i take risks. those investments lead to jobs created in america. i'm proud of being successful. of the taxes i pay. my taxes plus charitable contributions this year will be about 40%, so look, let's put behind this idea of attacking me because of my investments or money. >> has romney finally come up
8:03 am
with this plausible and strong defense about his personal wealth and success? basically owning it and not batting an eyelash? sxwl romney's own aides will admit that like many wealthy people, romney doesn't like talking about it. he doesn't want to talk about his money and that hurt him in his other debates because when the topic came up, he kind of got orrinry and evasive and had wordy answers that didn't really mean anything and he has, it's taken him three debates now. he was final ly able to put it into a simple group of declarative sentences. didn't seem to be ashamed. wasn't blaming it on barack obama. he was saying this is who i am. that's what he needed to do three debates ago. >> the old adage, money talks about -- newt's attacks on the media even fell flat when wolf blitzer struck back at him. >> are you satisfied right now with the level of transparency
8:04 am
as far as his personal finances? >> this is a nonsense question. >> mr. speaker, you made an issue of this this week when you said that he lives in a world of swiss bank and cayman island bank accounts. i didn't say that, you did. >> wouldn't it be nice if people didn't make accusations somewhere else they weren't willing to defend here? >> so gingrich must have known how important, the last big states before florida voters go. was he not prepared or did he come off as unprepared? he came off as sort of sleepy and off his game. he tends to be sort of a mercurial candidate. some days he's on, some he's off. i think there, wolf blitzer was prepared and wolf's a tough guy to push over. tougher than some of the other moderators we've had and wasn't going to take it. interestingly, just as the topic looked like it was going to be
8:05 am
dropped, romney step ped in thee and made it an issue and again, made gingrich look like he wasn't playing that alpha dog role, which is what determines how these play out. >> there were two other men on the stage. i want to show everybody how rick santorum did, basically firing back and giving what a lot of people are saying his best performance yet. >> what governor romney just said is that government run top down medicine is working well in massachusetts and he supports it. now, think about what that means going up against barack obama who you're going to claim, well, top down medicine at the federal level doesn't work, we should repeal it. he's going to say wait a minute, governor, you said it works well. folks, we can't give this issue away in this election. >> so santorum may not be walking away as the complete winner of the debates over the 19 we've had, but does he continue to prove why he's at these debates?
8:06 am
why he's got the support he does when he shows up strong? >> he's gotten stronger as a debater and in that exchange got under romney's skin, which is something gingrich wasn't able to do. romney won points, i make enough mistakes talking by myself -- which was an odd joke. santorum's coming out stronger. the problem is he's sort of running out of time and the map when you leave florida, doesn't look great if you're santorum. he's not really well positioned to capitalize on that. it's hard to see a root like with paul that he amasses a significant number of delegates. >> thank you, sir. great to see you. newt gingrich also tried the freddie mac attack, but governor romney came ready to the debate stage, prepared to pounce on that one. >> we began digging in after monday night because i had had about enough of this. we discovered to our shock,
8:07 am
governor romney owns shares of fannie mae and freddie mac. >> and mr. speaker, i know that sounds like an enormous revelation, but have you checked yours? you have investments in fannie mae and freddie mac. >> kelly ann, it's nice to see you. let's talk about this exchange. are you surprised that your candidate seemed to be caught flat footed on that and other topics, especially considering how strong he's been? >> no. i think people sometimes expect the candidates to act like chihuahuas and it's good to be churchill instead. this matter -- went right after the exchange in response to a question from wolf blitzer, congressman paul said this topic doesn't interest me much, i'd rather talk about x, y and z. we're hearing that from voters.
8:08 am
but if you look at the negative ads by the mitt romney campaign they are tieing newt gingrich to the housing crisis in florida, so they've put this issue on the table. we have a right to respond. it took him like 19 or 20 debates to have a good one. he had the best last night and has a new debate coach. after a while, if you have enough people whiserring to your ears, it plays off. he feels like he's the front-runner again, but what we like is what's going on on the ground. we like the fact that all the florida media are reporting our crowds are in the thousands. we like the intensity. >> you talk about the x, y z of the issues. something new is the m, the moon. and gingrich's plan, it got a lot of play this week when e he brought up his plans for a moon
8:09 am
colony. >> i do not want to be the country that having gotten to the moon first, turned around and said, it doesn't really matter, let the chinese dominate space. what do we care? i think that is a path of national decline and i am for america to be a great country, not a country on decline. >> i spent 25 years in business. if i had a business executive come to me and say they wanted to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, i'd say you're fired. the idea that corporate america wants to go off to the moon and build a colony there, it may be a big idea, but it's not a good idea. >> mitt romney may be channelling trump right there. taking a gamble what is in florida, the nasa space committee being huge there, but the gamble with this lunar pitch. >> newt is not a guy who just likes to play it safe. we know he's a big ideas guy. this is one he's thought about for a long time. he is a point.
8:10 am
i've been to that space center and they put a piece of white tape where it says in the 20th century, we will have somebody on mars. they put 21st century. there are many americans who love space exploration, but this is just one of many different issues. honestly, i'd rather be defending an idea for moon explore ra exploration than romneycare. how are we going to get around that as a party who the president himself provided the basis for obamacare, the crown jewel of the election, you're going to see that issue. senator santorum put it best last night. >> you bring up ideas and i think a lot of people are going to be interested to see this. our pollsters asked what words they often used to describe newt gingrich. what comes to mind first. they pop up as obama, experience
8:11 am
and government. do you think your candidate should focus more on -- more on the long game, and do you think it hurts him that republican voters think of government when they think of newt gingrich? >> it depends on what kind of government. he's the only person on stage with that kind of washington experience. this oddity about wanting an outsider to come and transform washington, the job the president of the united states is in washington and this idea that he can parachute in and transform the place is a bit nieve. the other thing is, i saw the word conservative popped up. that helps me. he's leading in all the polls among people who describe themselves as very conservative. he and romney split somewhat and romney has the moderates walking away. the mathematical challenge for romney is if you can only rely upon moderates and liberals, that doesn't add up in a lot of these states, including the ones after florida. he needs to be able to expand
8:12 am
that base into conservatives. this idea that newt's experience as speaker crediting 11 million new jobs working with clinton to reform welfare, have four balanced budgets. a balanced budget in washington today is a dream. it was a reality under clinton-gingrich administration. people should recognize that experience and harness it. all these members of congress who have a 12% approval rating, they have a 12% approval rating. they earned that without his help. >> have a nice weekend. thank you. we are following breaking news unfolding in cincinnati, where ten people have been hurt in an apparent casino collapse. this collapse happened as crews were pouring concrete for the casino, which was under construction. the exact cause is still not known. at the point, it doesn't appear that any of the injuries there are life threatening, but we'll bring you more on that as soon as we get them.

is l -- those religious liberties, i do believe that the relgs will pass this in maryland. already in the district of columbia, we do have that balance between protecting religious liberty and also equal marriage rights under the civil law, so i think we can find that way forward. maryland has in the past. the way forward is always the way forward is to protect rights equally under the law. >> let's talk about marylanders and how they're finding this vote almost divided over the issue of same-sex marriage. 49% in favor. 47% opposed. chris christie says this issue is too big for lawmakers to decide, so in his state, he wants to put it on a ballot. should an issue like this, the rights of a minority, be left up to the votes of a majority? >> i think the best resolution of these sorts of things and
8:47 am
throughout our history, we've bumped into these occasions where we have to, where it appears that there's a conflict in the fundamental principles of our country. but we've always resolved those conflicts in terms of extending rights more equally and broadly. best that it happened legislatively. sometimes, we have to go to court to get that done as a country. other times, it's a combination of several steps. courts, the people deciding, but ultimately, americans resolve these issues by extending rights more fully and more equally to all individuals and with regard to equal marital rights under the law. that doesn't mean we dictate to religions or churches how they define sack ramentes, but it means we protect rights. >> i brought up chris christie, you've even been mentioned as a possible 2016 candidate for president. if you pass this bill, how do
8:48 am
you think this is going to impact your political future? >> haven't real thought about it. what i do know is that. that in your state, there are many kids who live in households that are headed by gay parents. and they deserve the same equal protection under the law as every child in every other home. we all want the same thing. that's the common ground. >> thank you, sir. appreciate it. joining me now is washington governor. great to have you back on with me again and you have made some fast time in the last time we got to speak because your bill in washington state has passed a major hurdle. still, opponents are promising a tough battle to get the question on the ballot if it passes the legislature. do you believe it should be on the ballot or do you think it's just unfair?

>> i've made it clear to the ledge i islators in my state that it's time for them to step up and take the vote. i'm optimistic at that point that we believe we have at least the 25th vote if not more in our senate and that we have enough votes in our house, but i don't want them to say instead of taking the tough vote, send it to the voters. they were elected to make these decisions. it's time for us to do so. the opponents want to put it on the ballot in the fall. they are free to do so and i believe the people of my state will stand up and say it's time for marriage equality. >> i know there have been a lot of stories done about what's taking place in washington state and we've seen a lot of major busi e back the bill taking place there. we have starbucks, microsoft, nike, google. does it say anything to you that there are all of these people that are coming out to say they support spg like this. does it show that the fabric of

society is ready for this? to have this implemented and lawmakers just need to get it done? absolutely, i agree with that. we have been on a long journey in my state, we had a bill that said you cannot discriminate over housing and employment, and then we moved to domestic partnership and then we expanded that definition and now is a time for us to step up and say, equality means just that, that same-sex couples receive the same license and benefits and rights. we recognize their love like we to this love of a hetrosexual couple, and the children of these parents should know that we appreciate and respect and admire the love of their parents as we do all the couples in our state. i'm hopeful we can get it through the legislature and to my desk.

but i have learned that you have to not assume, but if it reaches the ballot i think the people in my state have gone through a journey that has led them to a decision that it's the right way for washington state to go. >> i know you are optimistic, through my research i think you'll get it done. come back so we can talk about when it happens. thank you for joining me. i appreciate it. >> thank you. >> he said what? the gingrich comments that were all the talk on twitter last night. maybe you contributed to them, we will have it after this. i'm here to unleash my inner cowboy. instead i got heartburn. hold up partner. prilosec can take days to work. try alka-seltzer. it kills heartburn fast. yeehaw! that's how it is with alzheimer's disease. she needs help from me. and her medication. the exelon patch -- it releases medication continuously
